“Our intention to bring high-quality healthcare, which is affordable and protocol-driven to all Ghanaians, finds representation in this beautiful building that we have today,” – Dr. Ann-Shirley Andoh, CEO, Pleasant Medical Centre (PMC).
The established clinic promised to specialize in digestive diseases. It would initially provide general health services before opening a Digestive Diseases Centre by the end of 2022.
The remarkable facility includes a cutting-edge lab, digital X-ray, pharmacy, physiotherapy unit, obstetrics and gynecology unit, and a fully equipped ambulance. The institution uses cutting-edge Hospital Management Software to run a paperless system. It will also expand its range to include endoscopy and kidney disease treatment.
Dr. Robert Nunoo, speaking during the inauguration of the clinic in Ashaiman, Greater Accra Region, said the facility will increase to 65 beds in the next two years.
Dr. Nunoo and a group of friends and family members are also striving to establish emergency and intensive care unit services. He also remarked:
“I think that Ashaiman deserves a big hospital considering how fast it’s growing.”
Ashaiman, which has a population of over 300,000 people, is still growing, with new housing developments cropping up on the outskirts. He also emphasized that the word ‘pleasant’ as it applies to the facility’s name is intentional in what he believed the center would offer.
“What’s the pleasant way? The pleasant way is the combination of thoughts and tenants that we go by. And those are the principles that are going to lead us in treating our patients,” he said.
Dr. Robert Nunoo was pivotal in the establishment of the medical facility, leading a team of specialists to a common rationale. He is a colorectal surgery specialist in Cary, North Carolina, who is linked with the WakeMed Cary Hospital and WakeMed Raleigh Campus medical institutions.
In 1998, he received his bachelor’s degree from the Karolinska Institute, one of the world’s leading medical schools and Sweden’s single largest center of medical academic research.
Dr. Nunoo chose to open a hospital in Ghana to treat digestive problems after 30 years of practice in the United States and Sweden. He assembled a team from Ghana and the United States in 2014 to work toward the establishment of a medical center that will provide general medical care with a focus on digestive diseases.
He stated that the hospital’s ideals of honesty and integrity, respect, teamwork, and continual development will guide its operations.
“There are always newer techniques and we’re here to embrace new ways and new techniques to improve ourselves to offer better care to the people of Ashaiman,” he said
DR. ROBERT NUNOO’S MOTIVATION
Dr. P.K. Nunoo, Dr. Robert Nunoo’s father, was his primary source of inspiration. Nunoo Senior established Bukom Ellphkwei Hospital, which once stood where Pleasant Medical Centre now stands brightly.
Sadly, the elder doctor died in August of this year and was buried just a week before his son’s new speciality hospital opened. Dr. Robert Nunoo led the crowd in a minute of silence for his father during his speech.
